GP consultation for new weight loss drug

You may have heard about Mounjaro®, a new medication approved by NHS England and NICE to help some people living with obesity. The drug, known by its generic name Tirzepatide, will be available from 23 June 2025 through GPs – but only for a small number of people who meet strict medical criteria.

This includes people with a BMI of 40 or more and at least four serious health conditions, such as high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, or type 2 diabetes. These criteria are part of a two-year phased rollout to ensure the drug is introduced safely into the health system.

Please do not contact your GP about this drug unless you believe you are eligible based on the criteria. Access is extremely limited, to allow the NHS to safely manage its introduction and monitor results.
